The expansions integrate well, don't add too much time to the game while inserting tons of variability and they all fit into the base box with.0001 cubic nanometer to spare!I would certainly not recommend throwing everything at newcomers on the first flight but once they've been around the 'verse a few times work each new bit-set in one by one.
Tons of fun!The additional player, variants, etc are all just icing on the 'oh god my main manifold just fell off!!' I bought the Big Anniversary edition that came with the first two expansions, and would love to recommend it. There are a bunch of interesting additions that could add extra complexity to the game. Probably more than would be possible to use at the same time.Unfortunately, I have yet to play the game at a table where the majority of the players already knew the rules. Because there are already SOOO many things to explain to get the game off the ground with new players, I have yet to use any of the additional options. That being said I think you COULD get a ton of value out of the expansions if you have a group of people willing to play on a regular basis. Immortal redneck switch review.
Yeah, I would have totally shelled out the money for the anniversary edition but sadly I could not find it anywhere and I found a post saying they don't intend to reprint it any time soon. The way I explain it to new players is before round 1 just explain how to build the ship and all of the components (minus aliens, i tell them to ignore those pieces for now). I tell them to try to minimize exposed connectors and that's it. Nobody looks at cards for the first round to level the playing field and then as cards show up I explain what's going on to the new player and show them the remaining types of cards afterwards. Then I explain the aliens and they're good to go in round 2. I've found this approach works fantastic with people who actually have never played anything other than Monopoly and Chess.
With people familiar with board games I'll usually explain aliens before round 1. Definitely worth it.The one expansion you can safely hold off on for a while though is the smaller 'Latest Models' expansion. Not because it's bad. Far from it.Rather because the ship blueprints introduce some really odd elements such as a dimensional rift running the length of your ship that can cause a single asteroid to become two and hit both sides of a ship; or the 'Deathstar' blueprint which wraps on all four sides forcing you to think more about whether something's a legal connection.Great blueprints and fun to play but certainly at the more advanced end of the scale. As an FYI, this and the upcoming expansion are the only ones not in the Anniversary Edition. I think the first expansion is a no-brainier if you enjoy the game. The expanded parts (especially the combos that take no explanation) plus the fifth player are really great to have. The second expansion is spectacular if you play a fair amount, but I wouldn't call it necessary.
I have he anniversary edition and there are still things we haven't touched yet, and while the fourth round ships are great, it's actually rate that we break out the second expansion parts and rules because they take a lot more explanation for newish players.Of course, if you're new to GT and don't have the base game yet, you're better off just getting the AE:).
